WARM WITH LOVE IN THE DROUGHT – SALINE INTRUSION 2020
For people in Khanh Lam commune, U Minh district, Ca Mau province, the last Tet was the first year in history they had to live with drought and saline intrusion because they could not keep up. Accompanying with people in drought and saline intrusion areas on April 23, Charity Club Warm With Love cooperated with the Provincial Union of Ca Mau Province to donate 120 tanks of 1,500 liters and 100,000 VND to buy freshwater for each household in difficult circumstances in the program “Join hands to overcome drought and saline intrusion”.
The drought and saline intrusion 2020 made many households stuck to see the rice died
Drought and saline intrusion this year penetrated deeply into the inland areas, causing many difficulties and losses to the lives of people in Khanh Lam commune, U Minh district, Ca Mau province because it’s too fast too suddenly. When it peaked, more than 20,500 hectares of rice and vegetables were severely affected, including more than 6,850 hectares of rice from 30 to 70% damage and 13,600 hectares of rice with 70% or more losses (according to the data updated to April 10th, 2020 by Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province).
When the drought and saline intrusion peaked, more than 20,500 hectares of rice and vegetables were severely affected.
The shortage of freshwater and saline intrusion seriously affects the cultivation and daily life of people. The province currently has nearly 21,000 households lacking freshwater due to drought on a large scale. The prolonged drought situation is also considered to be the cause of many roads and dikes in Ca Mau being seriously subsided. The whole province has over 1,130 points of land subsidence and landslides with a length of more than 24,700 meters.
If the saline intrusion in 2016 is considered a record, repeated once over hundreds of years, the one in 2020 will break all previously established records. This is a very strange phenomenon, even the elders said that it had never been up so early and so quickly like that. Ca Mau quickly announced an emergency situation due to a drought of level 2 in the freshwater-area of the U Minh district.
The shortage of freshwater and saline intrusion seriously affects the cultivation and daily life of people.
Despite the experience learned in 2016 and localities actively took initiative, the damage still occurred. These days, in most of the 3rd crop rice fields, everyone sees a gray from the sun-dried rice and cracked fields.
Join hands to support and implement solutions to combat drought and saline intrusion
In extreme cases, prolonged periods of lack of rain and increased use of water on tributaries and dam storage will make drought and saltwater intrusion longer and more severe. It is known that, before the forecast of this year’s drought will be more complicated than 2016, from mid-2019, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc requested the implementation of urgent solutions to prevent drought and saline intrusion.
Solutions to combat drought in localities include:
- To monitor the salinity level, constantly check the water source, if the salinity drops below the permitted level, immediately open a drain or actively pump into reservoirs and canals leading into the field to store freshwater.
- Dredging canals to increase storage capacity in the dry season; maintain and upgrade sewer and bulge systems to proactively overcome and limit leakage and saltwater intrusion; building steel dams, pumping stations … to create more favorable conditions for regulating and using water suitable for plants.
- Supporting water storage devices for scattered residential areas.

Every day, she asked for buckets of water from neighbors to cook and wash. “If it rains again, I would like to fill the tub and save it for a few months” – she said.
“This year, the saline intrusion came here, everyone could not keep up. Hearing the news of the sponsorship I was so happy, so happy that last night I could not sleep. As Ms. Mac Thi Ly, 38 years old said: “This year also recommends diseases with hygiene requirements so everyone should not drink rainwater, have to boil water, but now lack such water, rain or warm water anything I drink at home”. It can be seen that this year is especially difficult for people when simultaneously suffering two major natural disasters. When the drought and saline intrusion did not withdraw, the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 also made the life of poor rural people more difficult.
